Q: What is clinical research outsourcing and staffing?
A: Over the past two decades, competition, revenue pressures, and downsizing strategies in the pharmaceutical industry have led to an increase in outsourcing. In the clinical research sector, outsourcing could be defined as contracting with a specialized company that can provide highly skilled professionals to a clinical study sponsor on an as needed, project basis so that the study sponsor does not necessarily have to assume the additional burden of employing those individuals.
Q: What are the advantages of outsourcing and staffing to a clinical study sponsor?
A: There are many advantages:
- The costs of hiring full-time employees for a clinical study program are assigned to the outsourcing and staffing company. The savings can be significant
- The potential eventuality of what to do with the additional staff when the study program is ended becomes the responsibility of the outsourcing and staffing company
- If the human resources that are required for a specific clinical study program are simply not available within the sponsor company, an outsourcing and staffing company can quickly and efficiently fill the need

A: A typical CRO assumes the responsibility to manage a significant part or, in some cases, almost all aspects of a clinical study program. An outsourcing and staffing company will provide the personnel to the pharma or biotech sponsor so that the sponsor can manage the clinical study program.
